Felbm & Louis Reith Residency Concert

For years, Dutch artists Felbm and Louis Reith have fostered a mutual respect for one another’s processes and creations. Interestingly, however, their paths converge from quite different musical backgrounds. Whereas Felbm has found grounding in organic textures, with musical ideas and naturally-occurring patterns guiding his sound, at the heart of Louis’ work lies his fascination for technology, with machines and experimental processing shaping his approach.

The Out of Bounds residency will find the two friends exploring a mutual predilection they have for three concepts: the small, the sensitive, and the naive. They will look for a delicate balance between the organic and the structured, the natural and the technological, the recognizable versus the obscure. The artists seek to challenge themselves by immersing themselves in one another’s approaches. For Felbm, this entails working more abstractly, and for Louis, finding structure in his process.

The culmination of the residency will be a concert on Friday, July 8th. This concert is organized in collaboration with Quatre Mains Pianos.

About Felbm

After several years of producing primarily electronic music and playing keyboards for other artists, Dutch composer Eelco Topper made his debut in 2018 under the Felbm moniker with “Tape 1 / Tape 2.” The release found its way to a broad and international audience that admired the laid-back and ethereal jazz of his instrumental cassette sketches, while in 2020, his follow-up LP “Tape 3 / Tape 4” garnered more attention across a broad spectrum of radio and press.

In January 2021, Topper participated in a two-week residency at Buitenplaats Doornburgh, a former monastery on the outskirts of his hometown of Utrecht, Netherlands. The confluence of natural elements, contemplative architecture, and a peaceful surrounding deeply inspired his music-making and led to his next release, Elements of Nature. With Elements of Nature, Topper successfully preserves the joyful naïveté of the Tapes series, while exploring sweeping new ground, resulting in a decisive step forward for Felbm as a composer, producer, and artist.

About Louis Reith

Louis Reith graduated from AKI Academy of Art and Design, Enschede in 2010 and lives in Zetten, The Netherlands. Louis is known for his monochrome, mystical landscape constructions and Modernist-inspired geometrics. Influenced by architectural composition and reminiscent of the Bauhaus movement, who incorporated spirituality as part of their aesthetic process, Reith’s artist hand is subtly evident in a multimedia process that is both meticulous and delicate, as seen in his fine ink drawings, collaged shapes, and re-valued images.

Since 2013, Reith has owned Jordskred, a publishing platform with which he joined the Dutch Independent Art Book Publishers collective in 2017. He is also co-organiser and designer at Grafixx, an annual festival for graphic arts in Antwerp, Belgium, and a lecturer at AKI Academy of Art and Design in Enschede, The Netherlands.
